Context and problem

StayHealthy's MonitorMe: real-time monitoring of patients' vital signs in hospitals, with data from many devices, intelligent alerting and integration with hospital systems. A life-critical system.

Architecture drivers

Vital signs on screen within one second on average, monitoring that keeps working when a device fails, and high availability.

Decision

An event-driven architecture, chosen for performance, availability and fault isolation. Devices publish vital signs through a gateway to an event broker that feeds the nurse station, anomaly alerting, a 24-hour vitals store and MyMedicalData snapshots.

Result

First place in the Winter 2024 edition. The design is a team result; the examples in my six-step design process come from it.

Practise the same way of deciding

The six-step process behind this design is what teams rehearse in the Architectural Kata 2.0 workshop.
